IndyCar has normally been held at Texas Motor Speedway. This year, IndyCar returns to DFW with a unique format at a new street circuit, just under 3 miles around AT&T Stadium and Globe Life Field in Arlington. Amidst our excitement we wonder, when was the last time there was street racing this caliber in Dallas?
On July 8, 1984 the first and last Formula One race at Fair Park was held. It was so hot, the track around Cotton Bowl disintegrated and Hall of Fame driver Nigel Mansell passed out. Legendary driver Ayrton Senna hit a wall and told his race engineer: "I just cannot understand how I did that. I was taking it no differently than I had been before. The wall must have moved." The team did not believe him but after inspecting it after the race, it was in fact slightly moved only millimeters from a previous crash. This went to show his intense surgical ability in only his first F1 season.
We hope to see you at the inaugural GP Arlington, which marks the beginning of our most exclusive car club. This shirt features a glimpse into that day, as well as the circuit map around the Cotton Bowl on the back.
